According to police, her distant relative, 22-year-old Chetan Gowda, had followed her to the station. When Lavanya boarded a bus heading to Kakkepadavu, Chetan allegedly followed her inside and then pulled her outside. He then attacked her with a sharp weapon in front of people who were present.

Lavanya suffered severe injuries in the attack and was taken to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. Chetan fled the scene after the attack, and police immediately launched a search for him.
The suspect was apprehended the following day in the Pacchanady area near Mangaluru, approximately 24 hours after the attack. After being detained, he was taken to a hospital after attempting suicide by ingesting rat poison.
Investigators were looking into unrequited feelings as one of the main possible motives. According to information from the family and local media, Lavanya Gowda and Chetan Gowda had been in a relationship in the past that ended, but Chetan allegedly continued to harass Lavanya and tried to persuade her to get back together with him.
