A subsequent examination revealed a serious heart condition. According to later reports, Serginho’s heart weighed approximately 600 grams. Medical records had also warned several months before his death that continuing to play professional sports posed a significant risk. Edimar Bocchi, a doctor at the InCor cardiology institute, said he had warned team physician Paulo Forte several times about the risk of death.
The case prompted an extensive investigation and ultimately severe penalties for São Caetano. The STJD sports tribunal deducted 24 points from the club, president Nairo Ferreira de Souza was banned from working in the sport for 720 days, and physician Paulo Forte received a four-year ban from sports-related activities. The club was also fined 50,000 Brazilian reais (equivalent to $17,000 in 2004).
Serginho’s death not only ended the life of a talented soccer player in front of thousands of spectators, but also raised serious questions about whether the tragedy could have been prevented by more strictly heeding the earlier medical warnings.
