UDAYNARAYANPUR, WEST BENGAL, INDIA – APRIL 29, 2026 82-year-old Purna Chandra Dolui died shortly after casting his vote at polling station No. 245 in the Udaynarayanpur area of Howrah district. According to election officials, the man suddenly collapsed after voting. He was taken to Amta Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Election Commission later stated that the cause was age-related health problems and rejected claims that personnel from the central security forces had assaulted him.
However, the deceased man’s family and representatives of the Trinamool Congress party claimed that security personnel pushed the elderly man aside while his son was trying to help him vote. According to the family, Purna Chandra Dolui had vision problems. His son, Tarani Dolui, said his father collapsed after the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the death thus became the subject of a public dispute. While the family and TMC representatives blamed the security forces, election officials rejected the allegation. Available reports do not independently confirm that physical contact with security personnel caused the man’s death.
