The blow caused him serious injuries, and the man was left lying unconscious on the ground. Witnesses provided him with first aid before he was taken to a hospital in Montelíbano. Due to the severity of his injuries, he later had to be transferred to a specialized medical facility in Montería.
Although some reports announced his death, his family publicly denied the information the following day. According to their statement, Diego Esquivel Mendoza survived the attack and remained hospitalized at a clinic in Montería, where he was receiving specialized medical care.
