FARRUKHABAD, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA – JUNE 28, 2024 Woman, identified only as Rukmini K., worked as a domestic helper for a wealthy doctor. He allegedly insulted her caste status and it affected her so much that she committed suicide over it and hanged herself in his bathroom.
Although Indian law prohibits the caste system and the Indian Constitution guarantees equality for all, there is still a caste hierarchy of people deeply embedded in society. Unfortunately, it is still common practice there for people from lower castes to have limited access to education and even basic rights.
If you’re thinking about suicide, please stop and recognize that your pain is not permanent, but this step would be. It may feel like there’s no other way, but there is hope, even if it’s hard to see right now. Your feelings are temporary, and with help, they can pass.
