The WWII War Bond film “EVERY WAR BOND KILLS A JAP!” was created to encourage the purchase of war bonds. It features shocking footage of Japanese war crimes, including the Nanjing Massacre and civilian executions. The film emphasizes that these crimes can only be punished through an American victory.
Japanese war crimes occurred across Asia and the Pacific during Japanese imperialism, particularly in the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Historians and some governments hold Japan’s military forces—especially the Imperial Army, Navy, and Emperor Hirohito—responsible for millions of deaths. Some Japanese soldiers have admitted to these crimes.
Japan’s air forces were not prosecuted as war criminals since no clear international laws governed aerial warfare at the time. However, they conducted chemical and biological attacks despite Japan’s agreements in the Hague Conventions (1899, 1907), which banned such weapons.
Since the 1950s, Japanese officials have issued several apologies for wartime atrocities. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledges the suffering caused, particularly in Nanjing, where soldiers killed civilians, looted, and committed sexual violence. However, politicians like Shinzo Abe have denied government involvement in forcing women into sexual slavery, and visits by prime ministers to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors war criminals, remain controversial.
