AFGHANISTAN Photos show Russian (Soviet) soldiers injured by a landmine during their mission in Afghanistan, which lasted from 1979 to 1989. While some landmines are designed to kill on the spot and cause maximum casualties, other mines are designed only to injure. This is because a wounded soldier needs medical care while a dead one does not, costing the enemy much more effort and money.
