TULUM, MEXICO – OCTOBER 20, 2021 Anjali Ryot (@thestylelagoon) was an Indian influencer living in the USA who died in a tragic incident in the Mexican resort town of Tulum. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught in a shootout between two rival gangs. Another German tourist, Jennifer Henzold, also died in the incident.

Anjali was originally from the Solan district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In 2012, she moved to the United States, where she earned a master’s degree in electronics from San Jose State University. She later worked as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at LinkedIn. She also loved traveling, which she regularly shared on her social media, especially Instagram, where she had tens of thousands of followers.

She arrived in Tulum on October 18, 2021, to celebrate her 30th birthday, which was on October 22. While dining with other tourists on the terrace of the La Malquerida restaurant, a shootout broke out between two rival gangs. Although the gunmen were targeting a nearby table, several bullets struck the tourists. Anjali and the German tourist died on the spot, and three other tourists from Germany and the Netherlands were injured.

Following the tragedy, Anjali’s brother, Ashish Ryot, appealed to the mayor of Tulum to expedite the formalities related to repatriating his sister’s body to India. He also requested help in obtaining a visa to travel to Mexico to oversee the return of her remains to their homeland.
