BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, USA – MAY 19, 2025 In the early morning hours, a fire broke out in a residential building at the corner of 39th Street and 9th Avenue in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Sunset Park. 53-year-old Ashiq Hussain was trying to escape the fire and smoke using an FDNY extension ladder when its upper part suddenly collapsed and he fell down. He suffered serious injuries, to which he later succumbed at Maimonides Medical Center.
Hussain was an immigrant from Pakistan and worked as an Uber driver in New York. His family in Pakistan was soon to join him in the USA. Before the fall, he woke up all his roommates and helped them evacuate the building. He died a hero.
