SANTO DOMINGO, ECUADOR – JULY 18, 2022 Photos show the aftermath of a prison riot at Bellavista prison, where 13 men lost their lives. Their fellow inmates literally massacred them. Some had their heads severed, others were gutted or had limbs cut off.
The incident occurred during a series of prison uprisings that broke out across Ecuador in 2022. The riots were a result of gang conflicts over control of prisons and drug trafficking routes. The prisons are overcrowded, housing more than 33,000 inmates in facilities designed for 30,000. Corruption among guards allows access to weapons and explosives.
