ZAKI BIAM, BENUE STATE, NIGERIA – MARCH 20, 2017 At least 10 armed men arrived at the location in cars and motorcycles and launched one of the largest massacres in the entire Nigerian state of Benue. They mindlessly began shooting at people and setting houses on fire. Their target also included a group of children returning from school. The attack claimed at least 20 lives in total, though some sources report up to 50.
Although the cause of the attack remains unclear to this day, it is assumed that the motive stemmed from a long-standing conflict between local farmers and herders from the Fulani tribe. This conflict occasionally led to armed clashes but never to an attack of such magnitude.
Some media speculated that the local underworld boss Terwase Akwaza was behind the attack. He was the most wanted criminal in the entire country, involved in mass murders, kidnappings, robberies, and arson. However, he has been dead since 2020, having died in a shootout with the Nigerian army.
