GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE – OCTOBER 7, 2023 On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants launched a massive and unprecedented assault on southern Israel, breaking through the Gaza border fence under the cover of thousands of rockets. The attackers targeted civilian communities, kibbutzim, and a large music festival, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people. In addition to the killings, hundreds of hostages were forcibly taken back into the Gaza Strip, an act that caused deep national trauma and led to an immediate and total mobilization of the Israeli military.
In direct response, Israel officially declared war on Hamas and initiated a large-scale military operation aimed at dismantling the group’s infrastructure and governance. The retaliation began with intense aerial bombardments across the Gaza Strip, followed by a major ground invasion into heavily populated urban areas to target command centers and tunnel networks. This ongoing conflict has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis and high casualty rates within Gaza, drawing intense international scrutiny and fundamentally shifting the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
