FRANCISCO SÁ, MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL – JANUARY 21, 2026 Accident involving an illegally operated tourist bus claimed five lives, including a one-year-old child. The crash occurred at kilometer 474 of the BR-251 highway in the Serra de Francisco Sa mountain range. The bus overturned onto its side after its brakes failed while descending a steep slope.
The tourists traveling on the bus were on a multi-day trip. According to their statements, they had noticed as early as two days before the accident that the bus was in poor technical condition and that the brakes were malfunctioning. Despite their complaints, nothing was done.
In addition to the five fatalities, another 43 passengers suffered injuries of varying severity. Nine people were seriously injured.
The bus departed from the city of Arapiraca in the state of Alagoas and was heading to Itapema in the state of Santa Catarina. There were approximately 50 passengers on board. Brazil’s National Land Transportation Agency later confirmed that the bus was operating illegally, without registration in the system and without authorization for interstate passenger transport. Between 2025 and 2026, the vehicle accumulated 30 fines and had already been seized by police several times.
