SYRIA – NOVEMBER, 2014 Peter Edward Kassig was an American humanitarian worker and former soldier who, after serving in the U.S. Army, founded the aid organization SERA (Special Emergency Response and Assistance). He worked in the Middle East, where he helped civilians affected by the Syrian civil war, especially refugees and people in crisis areas.

In October 2013, Kassig was kidnapped in Syria while traveling by the radical Islamist group Islamic State. He spent more than a year in captivity. During that time, he converted to Islam and took the name Abdul-Rahman Kassig. Nevertheless, he continued to be held as a hostage and was ultimately sentenced to death by the propaganda leadership of ISIS.
In November 2014, ISIS released a video of his execution. In the footage, Kassig was killed in a propaganda video intended to intimidate the West and demonstrate the group’s power. The execution was carried out by a man known as “Jihadi John”, whose real name was later revealed to be Mohammed Emwazi. This masked executioner appeared in several other ISIS videos where he executed Western hostages.

Kassig’s death caused international condemnation and he became one of the most well-known victims of hostages murdered by ISIS during its most active phase, which is fortunately now just history.
