Myanmar has been politically unstable since its independence in 1948, with frequent armed conflicts, often along ethnic lines. The situation escalated dramatically in 2021 when a military coup brought a dictatorial junta to power. This sparked uprisings by the People’s Defense Forces (PDF), joined by civilians and former police trying to defend themselves and their families. Together with other ethnic militant groups, they are fighting the junta, resulting in the bloodiest phase of the civil war in the country’s history.
