ARACRUZ, BRAZIL – NOVEMBER 25, 2022 16-year-old Gabriel Rodrigues Castiglioni carried out an attack on two schools in the city of Aracruz, Espírito Santo, leaving four dead and twelve injured. Armed with a semi-automatic pistol stolen from his father, he meticulously planned the attack. Investigations revealed that Gabriel was inspired by similar school shootings abroad and openly admired Nazi ideology on social media.

The first attack occurred at Primo Bitti School, where he shot and killed 12-year-old Selena Zagrillo, who had tried to hide under a desk, and 48-year-old teacher Maria da Penha Pereira de Melo Banhos, who attempted to protect her students. Gabriel then moved to Praia de Coqueiral School, where he killed 45-year-old Cybelle Passos Bezerra Lara, who was calling for help, and 38-year-old Flavia Amoss Merçon Leonardo, who was leading students to safety.

After the attack, Gabriel was apprehended by police while attempting to flee. His actions were driven by cold-bloodedness and ideological hatred, as confirmed by his online activity and behavior during questioning.

Due to his age, Gabriel was tried in juvenile court and sentenced to the maximum three years of detention, the harshest penalty under Brazilian law for juvenile offenders. He is serving his sentence in a youth detention center, where he is also undergoing psychological assessment and therapy. The court’s decision sparked public outrage, as many viewed the punishment as too lenient given the brutality of the crime and the number of victims. However, the court acted within the legal framework, which prioritizes rehabilitation over punitive measures for minors.
