DOURADOS, MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL – MARCH 16, 2026 50-year-old Marcos Freire, also known as “Maricota,” was serving a sentence in an open-regime prison. He was convicted of a robbery-homicide committed against a woman. As he was returning from work back to the prison, he was surprised by a hitman right in front of the prison building. He killed him with several shots to the head. When Maricota fell dead to the ground, the hitman fled the scene.
Although prison staff were immediately mobilized and the police were called without delay, he managed to escape. One of the lines of investigation assumes that the murder could have been revenge for his criminal past.
