PRAYAGRAJ, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA – JANUARY 29, 2025 During one of the world’s largest religious festivals, Maha Kumbh, a tragic incident occurred on January 29, 2025, claiming the lives of at least 30 people and injuring over 60 others. The panic broke out in the early morning hours in the Indian city of Prayagraj, where millions of pilgrims gathered at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati rivers to participate in a ritual bath.
According to eyewitnesses, crowds struggled to reach the sacred waters when a sudden stampede ensued. Pilgrims had warned the police about the danger of overcrowded areas and requested the opening of additional access routes, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
Indian authorities responded immediately, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah contacting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and announced stricter security measures for the remaining parts of the festival, which will continue until February 26.
Despite the tragedy, the festival is still ongoing, with millions of devotees continuing their religious rituals. Organizers are now tightening security measures to ensure safety and prevent further such disasters.
