BANGLADESH, 1971 Event known as the Bangladesh Genocide took place from March 25 to December 16 in 1971. It was a systematic massacre and violence committed by the Pakistani army in East Pakistan, which is today’s Bangladesh. The genocide claimed millions of lives and led to the declaration of independence of Bangladesh.
The Pakistani army, along with the Islamic militias Al-Badr and Al-Shams, carried out ethnic cleansing against Hindus and anyone they suspected of supporting Bangladesh’s independence. The systematic rape of Bangladeshi women was particularly brutal. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 400,000 women were raped during these 8.5 months.
They also targeted educated and intelligent Bangladeshis. Doctors, professors, journalists and writers were automatically considered as supporters of Bangladeshi separation.
India by this time was facing a mass influx of refugees from Bangladesh and was as interested as they were in weakening Pakistan, and so became involved in the conflict. Pakistan responded with air strikes on India on 3 December 1971. This began the India-Pakistan war, which lasted only 13 days before Pakistani forces surrendered on 16 December 1971.
