PHILIPPINES – FEBRUARY 27, 2017 Jürgen Gustav Kantner was a German sailor who was executed by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group in the Philippines.

On November 5, Jürgen and his wife Sabine Merz were attacked while sailing in the sea between the Philippines and Malaysia. During the attack, the elderly men shot his wife dead. Jürgen was taken hostage and taken to the southern province of Sulu. The terrorists demanded a ransom of 30 million pesos (equivalent to 600,000 US dollars). However, they never got that, so he was executed.

The incident in the Philippines was not their first unpleasant incident from the cruises. In 2088, he and his wife were captured by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab off the coast of Somalia, where they were held captive for 52 days. The German government paid a ransom for them and they were subsequently set free. When they returned to Germany, Jürgen criticized the actions of the German government, believing that if the ransom was paid, the risk of capture for other sailors increased. At the same time, he started gathering a plan from Germany to get his ship back from the pirates who kidnapped him. He went back to Somalia and stole his boat from them, which was anchored off the beach where he was kidnapped.
