GUARAPARI, BRAZIL – JANUARY 2, 2024 Arthur Máximo da Cruz, just 18, was on his motorbike on his way home from work. He was working with his father in a car accessories shop. He didn’t get the right of way from the driver of a fast-moving car at an intersection and was hit. The impact threw him into the air and when he landed next to a pole, he was already dead. He almost hit a cyclist, who miraculously survived.
The driver of the car was arrested by police and identified as 23-year-old João Victor Barroso Miranda. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries for treatment and subsequently detained by police. He refused a breathalyzer test for alcohol, but it was clear that he had consumed alcohol prior to driving. There was an empty bottle inside his car. He now faces a charge of manslaughter.
