BELÉM, PARÁ, BRAZIL – APRIL 22, 2025 Brazilian actor and singer Augusto Demétrio Neto, better known as Gutto Xibatada, died at the age of 39 due to complications related to the infectious disease mpox. Apparently, he became infected at the end of 2024.
According to his sister, who shared information on social media, Gutto decided to keep his diagnosis secret in order to avoid public attention. However, his health condition rapidly deteriorated – he suffered from loss of speech, vision, and touch, and in the final days of his life, he had serious problems with breathing and eating.
On April 22, he was transported to the municipal hospital Mário Pinotti in Belém, where he was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite all the care provided, he died approximately eight hours after admission. Local health authorities stated that the cause of death was complications related to mpox infection and his previous health issues, including asthma.
The singer’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the medical care provided, particularly with the lack of monitoring and assistance during his hospitalization. However, the health secretariat of the city of Belém stated that Gutto was properly treated and isolated, and that all persons who had come into contact with him were monitored, but showed no signs of illness.
In the case of mpox infection, it is necessary to isolate immediately, contact a doctor, and maintain hygiene; treatment is usually supportive, but in severe cases antiviral medication can be used. Prevention involves limiting physical and sexual contact with infected persons, strict hygiene, vaccination of at-risk groups, and caution when traveling.
