Consequences of copperhead bite to finger

USA Man was bitten on the tip of his right ring finger by a copperhead. He documented the lengthy and painful healing process in several photos, with six months between the first and the last picture. Unfortunately, due to extensive necrosis, he ended up losing the fingertip, which the snake venom literally dissolved.

Cooperhead

Copperhead venom contains very potent hemotoxins that destroy blood vessels and cells. Although their bite is usually not fatal for a healthy adult, it is always necessary to seek medical attention.

In the USA, the copperhead bites more people each year than any other venomous snake. However, not because it is aggressive, but because it lives near people and is well camouflaged. If you encounter a copperhead, the most important thing is to stay calm. Most bites occur by accident, for example when a person steps on the snake. If you don’t touch it and avoid sudden movements, the snake has no reason to attack you.

If a bite does happen for some reason, try not to panic. Panic increases the heart rate and allows the venom to spread faster. Try to keep the injured limb below heart level and, most importantly, do not use a tourniquet or attempt to suck out the venom. Then call emergency services.
