MAIDUGURI, BORNO, NIGERIA – MARCH, 16, 2026 Series of suicide bombings has shaken the city of Maiduguri. The attacks were strategically aimed at high-traffic areas – marketplaces, the vicinity of the post office, and the teaching hospital campus. According to the latest available reports, at least 7 people have died and dozens more were injured. However, these figures may not be final.
Witnesses described the situation as absolute chaos. Once the dust settled after the blasts, the streets were littered with the bodies of the dead and wounded. Those who could helped evacuate them to the hospital. Facilities were so overcrowded that some victims had to be treated in the hallways.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum attributes these attacks to terrorist groups operating in the region – Boko Haram or the African branch of ISIS. He views them as retaliation for the ongoing government offensive in the area. The army has been deployed and counter-terrorism operations are being conducted, forcing the militants to retreat from cities to rural hideouts.
