TURIN, ITALY – JANUARY 31, 2026 Protest escalated into serious violence when demonstrators linked to the Antifa movement took to the streets in response to the closure of the leftist social center Askatasuna. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned chaotic as part of the crowd started throwing stones, setting trash bins on fire, and attacking police.
During the clashes, a group of protesters was seen surrounding a police officer and brutally assaulting him with punches, kicks, and improvised weapons. The injured officer was only rescued after intervention by his colleagues.
According to Italian media, dozens of police officers were injured during the unrest, and several participants were detained. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the incident as unacceptable aggression against state institutions and emphasized that the government will not yield to extremist violence.
