Two Indians set themselves on fire during protest

PITHAMPUR, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA – JANUARY 3, 2025 Dramatic protest took place against the planned disposal of 337 tons of hazardous waste from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. During the demonstration, two men poured flammable liquid over themselves and set themselves on fire. Thanks to the swift intervention of other protesters, the flames were extinguished, and the two men were taken to a local hospital with burn injuries that are not life-threatening.

The protests erupted after the decision to move toxic waste from Bhopal to a local hazardous waste facility for incineration. Residents of the city expressed concerns about potential environmental and public health risks. Despite assurances from authorities regarding the safety of the process, tensions remain high.

It is worth recalling that in 1984, Bhopal witnessed one of the worst industrial disasters in history when a toxic gas leak from the Union Carbide factory claimed thousands of lives and caused long-term health issues for tens of thousands more. The issue of disposing of the remaining hazardous waste from this disaster remains a sensitive topic even four decades later.
