JAPAN Aokigahara, also known as the “Suicide Forest,” is an impenetrable forest at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan. This dark and mysterious forest has become infamously known for the high number of suicides that have occurred there.
Aokigahara is a dense forest filled with twisted trees and covered with soft moss. The volcanic origin of the soil causes the area to be exceptionally quiet – the sounds of wind or animals are muffled. This mysterious atmosphere has contributed to its reputation as a place of death.
Historically, the forest was associated with the practice of ubasute, where elderly and sick people were left in the forest to die. While this tradition is debated, it shows that Aokigahara has long been linked with death and suffering.

The 1960 novel Nami no Tou by Seichō Matsumoto linked the forest to suicides and likely contributed to its infamous reputation. It gained international attention through documentaries and films like The Forest or vlogs, though these often faced criticism for their unethical approach.
Japan faces the problem of a high suicide rate, which is more stigmatized in the country than in other cultures. Organizations offer support to people in crisis, while volunteers regularly walk through the forest to assist those who may still change their decision.
