OMDURMAN, KHARTOUM STATE, SUDAN – JANUARY, 2025 At the end of January 2025, a brutal attack on the civilian marketplace Sabreen Market occurred in the Omdurman area, which lies opposite the capital Khartoum in Sudan.
According to information from health authorities and international agencies, the market was hit by artillery or mortar fire, which was attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The attack took place in a densely populated area where hundreds of civilians were present at the time of the strike.
The consequences were devastating – according to official data, approximately 54 to 56 people were killed and more than 150 others were injured. Among the victims were women and children, and local hospitals were quickly overwhelmed with the wounded. Some victims were transported in critical condition, while others died directly at the scene.
The attack also caused extensive damage to stalls, buildings, and surrounding infrastructure. Residents described scenes of chaos, smoke, and panic, while rescuers and volunteers tried to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals.
The incident sparked strong international criticism. The Sudanese government and the UN described it as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. The RSF, on the other hand, denied responsibility and accused the army of conducting fighting in civilian areas.
The entire event fits into the broader context of the civil war in Sudan, which since 2023 has significantly destabilized the country and caused one of the worst humanitarian crises of the present time.
