Chaurasia tried to deny responsibility, claiming he wasn’t drunk, but that the airbag suddenly exploded, blocking his view. However, the responding police measured an elevated level of alcohol in his breath and blood. He was charged with negligent homicide and other criminal offenses. His companion, who owned the vehicle, was also detained and is awaiting further investigation.
