LA PAZ, EL SALVADOR – SEPTEMBER 23, 2025 Man identified as 80-year-old Florencio Campos died after falling from the bed of a pickup truck, in which he was traveling as a passenger. He sustained serious injuries from the fall and died before medical personnel arrived. The incident occurred between the towns of San Antonio Arriba and Santiago Nonualco.
In El Salvador, specially modified pickup trucks are used to transport passengers as an alternative form of public transportation. These vehicles travel along set routes between towns and villages, picking up anyone who signals them. It is a very cheap but highly risky mode of transport. Passengers often sit in the bed of an overcrowded pickup in an open space without seat belts or airbags.
