SYRIA Alan Henning was a British humanitarian worker who was kidnapped and murdered in 2014 by the Islamic State (ISIS). Henning, originally a taxi driver, decided to help in Syria during the civil war and joined a humanitarian mission that provided aid to those suffering due to the conflict. He was kidnapped in December 2013 while working on the mission in Syria and was later held captive and executed by ISIS in September 2014. He was 47 years old at the time of his death. His death was publicly documented in a propaganda video released by the group. Henning’s capture and subsequent death triggered a strong international response and highlighted the risks faced by civilian humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
The executioner has been identified as Mohammed Emwazi, but he is better known by his nickname “Jihadi John,” which he was given by the media. In the worst sense of the word, he became famous thanks to this video. John was not some ignorant ISIS recruit. He was a citizen of the united kingdom where he grew up from the age of 6. He even studied computer science at the University of Westminster in London. But he became radicalized during his studies, and when ISIS gained power, he fled to Syria to join them. He died on 12 November 2015 in a US drone strike.
