The group focuses on attacks against the Egyptian government and military forces, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula. In 2014, it pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) and has since operated under the name Wilayat Sinai. The group is responsible for a number of deadly attacks, including bombings of military and police targets, and is considered one of the main terrorist threats in the region.
