SERGOKALA, DAGESTAN, RUSSIA – JULY 10, 2016 Magomed Nurbagandov was a Russian police officer and serviceman who became a national hero due to his bravery and determination, especially related to the tragic circumstances of his death. He was born on January 9, 1985, in the village of Sergokala in Dagestan, a part of the Russian Federation. He worked as a police officer, serving in various security forces, combating terrorism and organized crime in a region particularly plagued by these issues.
Magomed Nurbagandov became widely known after his tragic death on July 10, 2016. On that day, he and several friends, including his cousin, were attacked by armed Islamist terrorists in the woods near the village of Sergokala. The terrorists, who belonged to an Islamist group, captured Nurbagandov and his friends and subsequently tortured them.
Under the threat of death, the terrorists attempted to force Nurbagandov to publicly call on his fellow police officers to resign from their duties on camera. However, Magomed refused and, despite the torture, encouraged his colleagues to “keep working,” a phrase that later gained legendary significance. Knowing that death awaited him, his words in that critical moment demonstrated his incredible courage and loyalty to his principles.
Following this, Magomed Nurbagandov was executed – the terrorists shot him. A video of his murder, along with his brave words, was later released and sparked a massive reaction both in Russia and internationally.

After his death, Nurbagandov was posthumously awarded the title of “Hero of the Russian Federation,” the highest honor in Russia. His courageous act inspired many, and his story became a symbol of resistance against terrorism and dedication to justice under any circumstances.
