Execution of Nicholas Berg

BAGHDAD, IRAQ – MAY 7, 2004 The world was shocked by a brutal video showing the execution of 26-year-old American Nicholas Berg, a technician specializing in repairing communication towers. He traveled to Iraq for job opportunities related to rebuilding infrastructure after the American invasion.

During his stay, he was briefly detained by police in Mosul on suspicion of espionage. After his release, he disappeared, and on May 8, 2004, his decapitated body was found near Baghdad.

Three days later, a video of his execution appeared online. In it, Berg is seen kneeling in an orange jumpsuit in front of five masked armed men, who described his killing as retaliation for the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison. The murder was reportedly carried out under Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of an organization that later became a precursor to the Islamic State.

Berg’s execution was among the first widely circulated internet decapitations and became a symbol of brutality and a new era of online terrorist propaganda.
