RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – JANUARY 22, 2025 Fofão was known widely in the area mainly because of his extreme obesity. He lived a solitary life and did not go out much, partly because of his limited mobility.
When neighbors smelled the pungent odor of death coming from his apartment in the Retiro neighborhood, they knew immediately that something was wrong. Police and firefighters were called to the scene and forced entry into the property.
Fofão was found dead. He was lying completely naked on the ground. His apartment was in an extremely unsanitary condition and showed signs of hoarding. Because of the amount of rubbish inside, even the police had difficulty accessing the place and a cleaning crew had to be called in.
His body showed no signs of violence. Although the results of the forensic autopsy are not yet known, it is almost certain that he died from health complications related to extreme obesity.
