Algeria has long experience with Islamist violence, particularly from the period of the civil war in the 1990s, when the country faced widespread attacks by armed groups. Although the security situation has significantly improved in recent decades, individual extremist cells continue to emerge in the country, and security forces remain frequent targets of attacks.
