TRUJILLO, LA LIBERTAD, PERU – MAY 3, 2026 Tragic accident occurred in the residential area of Las Palmas del Golf. Security guard Juan Martínez Torres, 54, was sitting at the intersection of Las Capullanas and Los Tallanes streets when he was struck by a Mercedes-Benz driven by Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna, 32.

Security cameras captured the moment the vehicle hit the man and pinned him against the facade of a house. Juan suffered severe multiple injuries, including fractured ribs and serious spinal damage. Rescue workers transported him to Belén Hospital in Trujillo, where he spent five days in the intensive care unit. On May 8, the hospital confirmed his death. According to doctors, he died from severe respiratory failure and extensive brain damage caused by the consequences of the accident.
The investigation subsequently found that Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna had 1.84 grams of alcohol per liter of blood and was also driving with an expired driver’s license, which had expired in July 2022.
In June 2026, Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna was sentenced to 4 years, 6 months, and 26 days in prison for negligent homicide. The court also ordered her to pay the victim’s surviving family members 329,280 Peruvian soles (approximately $97,400) in damages and permanently banned her from driving motor vehicles.
