NAIROBI, KENYA, 2026 Woman was caught attempting to steal a mobile phone. Immediately afterward, a crowd gathered around her. Instead of calling the police, they took the law into their own hands and kicked her repeatedly while she was on the ground.
In some parts of Africa, including Kenya, the phenomenon of vigilante justice remains widespread. People who have little trust in the police and the justice system often choose to take the law into their own hands and physically punish an alleged offender themselves.
Although this form of punishment may sometimes appear to be quick and effective, it is a serious violation of the alleged thief’s human rights. Everyone has the right to a fair trial and to be punished according to the law. Never participate in such acts and always call the police instead.
