Finger bitten off by alligator snapping turtle

Boy stuck his hand into a terrarium with an alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). The turtle instinctively attacked and bit off and ate his entire finger. Doctors attempted to save the boy by removing the finger from the turtle’s stomach and sewing it back on. Whether this was successful is unknown.

As the name “alligator” suggests, this is not the slow-moving turtle you know from pet stores. The alligator snapping turtle is an extremely powerful predator with a jaw that can cause very serious injuries. Its reactions are almost instantaneous in order to catch fish. It can easily amputate the finger of an adult human.

This incident should be a lesson to all parents, as well as a reminder to handle dangerous animals safely.
