INDONESIA – DECEMBER, 2016 Photos show the funeral of a woman named Bebe who died on November 30, 2016, of unknown causes. As is customary in Christian parts of Indonesia, the funeral is held with an open casket and the deceased wearing a beautiful dress and perfect makeup.
Although something like this may seem degrading to some cultures, the open casket is a perfectly normal practice in Indonesia. The deceased is sometimes even taken home by the family. In some parts of Indonesia, the deceased is even displayed for several weeks or months before being buried.
Taking pictures of the deceased at funerals is not taboo in Indonesia either. The photos serve as a memento and are proudly displayed in public. It is not that uncommon to find photos and videos of Indonesian funerals even on platforms with strict ToS such as YouTube.
