KOH SICHANG, THAILAND – APRIL 7, 2019 Miriam Beelte, 26, was still living with her parents in Hildesheim, Germany. She liked to walk her dog and play volleyball. She studied mechanical engineering at the University of Hannover and almost immediately after graduating in 2018 found a job as a mechanical engineer at an internationally operating automotive supplier. She was sent on a business trip to Asia, which she decided to combine with a short holiday.

In Thailand, she headed to the infamous city of Pattaya, which is located near the capital Bangkok and is known for its prostitution and rich nightlife. On that fateful day, she decided to take a boat trip from Pattaya to the nearby island of Koh Sichang. Upon arrival, she rented a scooter to get a good look at the island.
Ronnakorn Romruen, 24, who worked as a garbage collector on the island, immediately noticed the woman’s arrival and began to follow her discreetly. When they were at a secluded spot by the monument, he pounced on her. He forced her to have sex, but was unable to reach orgasm. He forced her to have oral sex, but Mirism managed to get free and started to run away. Fearing capture, the man caught up with her and threw her off a cliff. She broke her neck on impact and was left wedged between the rocks. He smashed her head in for good measure so no one would recognize her.
When he had finished the deed, he went home quietly, where he washed his clothes and watched TV. But the police caught him the next day. After three hours of intense questioning, he confessed to the crime. He was sentenced to death.
