SOUTH CAROLINA, USA – SEPTEMBER, 2019 Carolina Bowen, 20, a student at the College of Charleston, had type 1 diabetes. She forgot to disinfect her insulin pump and injected herself with Rhizopus oryzae fungus. It is found in droppings and rotting vegetation. It gave her a serious flesh-eating infection.
The infection had spread so much that it had eaten flesh all over her shoulder and much of her torso. Necrosis caused septic shock and multiple organ failure. Carolina underwent surgery, but lost the fight for her life.
