AMPARA, SRI LANKA – SEPTEMBER 18, 1999 (LTTE) Tamil Tigers stormed Gonagala village early that morning and massacred 50 Sinhalese residents of that village. Many people in the village were sleeping when the attack took place and some of them were brutally killed and beaten to sleeping mats.
The LTTE, which came out of Gongal area, continued its killing spree and killed 4 more civilians in the village. Of the 54 dead, 27 were men, 17 were women and 10 were children. Two of the dead women were pregnant mothers.
According to the forensic report, one person died of gunshot wounds while the others died of severe cuts caused by knives and manna. 4 others suffered serious cuts.
