PETIT-GOÂVE, HAITI – JANUARY 1, 2026 Woman identified as Rosedanie Berthina Benêche was found dead in the house where she lived with 11 other people, in the Lahat area on Galbo Street in Tigwav. She was drowned headdown in a barrel of water. She left behind three children.

Police questioned all the residents of the house, who stated that it must have been an accident. According to their accounts, Rosedanie returned home drunk from a New Year’s Eve party when everyone was already asleep. However, the police found one person’s statement insufficient and made an arrest for “failure to assist a person in distress,” which is a crime under Haitian law.
Her dead body
Although the investigation is still ongoing, some clues suggest that Rosedanie may have been murdered by her partner during a jealous drunken dispute. Theories circulating on social media claim the motive was money. She did not have much, but she reportedly helped people in need and gave to the poor. Because of this, rumors spread in the neighborhood that she was wealthy.
