Israel’s ban on importing goods into Gaza has severely damaged the local economy, causing a sharp rise in prices and the threat of famine. Hamas is attempting to deal with this by completely ignoring basic economic rules and forcing prices of essential foods to remain artificially low through intimidation.
Under threats of violence, they force traders to sell items such as flour, oil, sugar, and eggs at regulated prices even when merchants’ costs are higher. In addition to physical punishment, Hamas also confiscates stockpiles and compels sellers to accept damaged banknotes.
