WEST DAFUR, SUDAN – MARCH, 2022 Youseif Yagoub Ahmed was a 35-year-old Sudanese humanitarian worker and human rights activist who operated in the Darfur region. He was a member of the Darfur Human Rights Monitors network, which focused on documenting human rights violations in the area. He also worked for the humanitarian organization World Concern and took part in field missions aimed at monitoring the situation of civilians.
On March 5 and 6, 2022, he and two other activists were attacked by an armed militia in the Jebel Moon area in West Darfur. The group was traveling during a mission documenting the situation in the region. Ahmed was killed by a firearm during the attack and died at the scene along with two other colleagues.
West Darfur has long been one of the most conflict-affected areas of Sudan. The region has repeatedly been affected by ethnic violence, clashes between armed militias, and struggles for control over territory and resources. In recent years, the situation has significantly worsened, especially after the collapse of security structures and the escalation of the civil conflict, leading to thousands of deaths, mass displacement of civilians, and frequent attacks on humanitarian workers.
