MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, USA – JANUARY 24, 2026 There was another deadly clash between federal immigration agents (ICE / Border Patrol) and protesters who were opposing extensive immigration enforcement in the city. During the incident, 37‑year‑old American citizen Alex Jeffrey Pretti, who worked as an intensive care nurse, was shot and killed by federal agents during a confrontation on a street in downtown Minneapolis.

According to available information, Pretti was among the demonstrators, and some witnesses say he was recording on his mobile phone and trying to help others during the altercation with agents. Federal authorities stated that Pretti allegedly approached the agents with a weapon he had with him and that shots were fired during the struggle. Other sources and video recordings, however, suggest that he may have been unarmed or holding only a phone before being shot multiple times, with some agents tackling him to the ground before the shooting.
Pretti’s death has sparked widespread protests in Minneapolis and other cities, criticism of federal actions, and calls for investigations into the use of force. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the incident horrifying and urged an end to the harsh tactics used by ICE agents in the state.
