ISIS-affiliated militants launched major attack against Nigerien forces

NIGER – JUNE 27, 2026 In western Niger, there was another large-scale attack by armed groups linked to the so-called Islamic State in the Sahel region (ISSP), which have long been operating in the Tillabéri region. According to available reports, this was a coordinated operation in which military targets in the Inates area were simultaneously attacked, as well as other positions around the town of Banibangou, which is located near the border with Mali.

The attack began in the morning hours and involved the use of heavy weapons, rocket launchers, machine guns, and improvised vehicles. The fighting lasted only a short time because the attackers advanced quickly and used the element of surprise. Nigerien units withdrew from part of their positions after the initial clash and in some cases tried to retreat away from the base, where further ambushes occurred in the surrounding area. According to various sources, the army suffered heavy losses in lives and equipment, including destroyed and captured vehicles and weapons.

Part of the attacks was also a second strike on another military post and a government facility in Banibangou, where further casualties among soldiers occurred and part of the garrison fled. Overall, this is one of many similar incidents affecting western Niger in recent years, an area long considered one of the most unstable parts of the Sahel.

The security situation in Niger is generally very serious. The country faces a long-term insurgency by armed groups linked to the Islamic State in the Sahel (ISSP) as well as the al-Qaeda network (especially the JNIM group). These organizations take advantage of weak state control in the border regions of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, where they move freely across borders and regularly attack both the army and civilians. The Tillabéri region is among the most affected, with frequent attacks on military bases, villages, and transport routes, leading to population displacement and a long-term humanitarian crisis.
