DEIR AL-ZOUR, SYRIA – JANUARY 9, 2025 After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, a power vacuum in Syria has enabled ISIS to regain a foothold, particularly in the Deir ez-Zor province. The group has exploited the region’s destabilization to acquire new weapons and strengthen its presence.
Recently, ISIS released a video claiming responsibility for the killing of four members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in an armed attack in Deir ez-Zor. This attack is part of a series of operations carried out by the group since the area came under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
In response to the growing ISIS threat, the United States has conducted a series of airstrikes targeting 75 ISIS-affiliated sites in Syria. These operations aim to diminish the group’s ability to exploit the current instability in the region.
Concerns over the resurgence of ISIS are not limited to the Middle East. A recent attack in New Orleans, where an ISIS-inspired individual drove a vehicle into a crowd, has sparked fears of a global revival of the terrorist organization.
The situation in Syria remains highly volatile. Following the collapse of Assad’s regime, various factions, including HTS and Turkish-backed groups, are vying for control over strategic areas like the Tishrin Dam. This dynamic complicates efforts to maintain security and stability in the region.
The international community, including the European Union, is now deliberating on how to respond to the new political reality in Syria. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, for instance, has proposed reassessing sanctions on Syria in light of recent developments and emphasized the importance of protecting minority rights in the country.
All videos and content published on this platform related to ISIS are in no way intended as a promotion of terrorism or this organization. We strongly condemn all forms of terrorism and extremist activities, including those associated with ISIS.
