INDIA Shocking CCTV footage from a mobile phone shop in India captures the moment a young man, for reasons that remain unknown, put a lithium-ion mobile phone battery into his mouth and bit down on it. Within seconds, the battery violently exploded, releasing flames and sparks. He suffered painful burns in the incident and was taken to a hospital. The exact location and date of the incident have not yet been disclosed.
According to experts, puncturing the battery’s casing triggered what is known as thermal runaway. During this process, an uncontrolled chemical reaction begins inside the battery cell, rapidly releasing large amounts of heat, flammable gases, and flames. As a result, lithium-ion batteries can pose a serious hazard if they are crushed, punctured, or otherwise mechanically damaged.
The incident sparked a strong reaction on social media and served as a reminder that lithium-ion batteries must be handled with great care. Experts advise against using damaged or swollen batteries, handling them improperly, or exposing them to pressure, punctures, or high temperatures.
